My Heart is Breaking

My sweet, sweet dog, whom I've had since she was this big (at ten weeks old)

and whose favorite thing to do is lounge around like a big goof in the sun (followed by her other favorite thing, which is lounge around like a big goof tucked under some covers, which she can totally do for herself)

the first and only dog I've ever had, and the one who saw me through a move, a wedding (well, she ditched on the wedding, but she came back a week later), put up with my pregnant laziness (and her consequent lack of walks), the one who mutely licks my face when I'm sad, curls up on my feet when I'm cold, and has more than once in the last nine years let me use her for a pillow when I needed comforting,

that sweet dog is not well. Her back legs are failing her, and the steriods aren't helping enough, and the next step in treatment is unthinkably expensive.

I don't know what to do except cry.

Ugh. I have had many dogs and two cats in my life and wow does it stink to get to the point where things wear out. Thinking of you.

I'm so sorry. I hope you can reach a decision that will bring you some peace. I can't imagine how difficult this must be.

Not sure how you could even type this without flooding your keyboard. Hope you find a way to help her find the best life for her right now. So sad for you.

We sent our dog to live on my husband's uncle's ranch in December. He was old. He needed things we couldn't give him. It was better in the long run.

We found out on Sunday morning that he died.

My heart breaks for you right now. I know just how you feel.

Ohhh, so sorry to hear that! Until I got a dog myself, I couldn't appreciate the kind of relationship they give you. Sending you big hugs.

I am so sorry. I have a 14yo Lab and may have to make some very difficult decisions soon too.

My heart aches for you. I lost my dearest, sweetest-ever cat in January and I'm still sad and angry about the whole thing. Pets are so loving, devoted and forgiving. It makes it so much more painful when something takes them down.

Thank you all, so much, for your kind words and hugs. Today she has been a bit more steady on her feet and even managed to climb the stairs herself (though I had to carry her down this morning, which was heart-wrenching). We are hoping perhaps the meds will keep her more stable. All your thoughts mean so much.

Insta-Mom, I am so sorry for your loss. I know how gut-wrenching and painful that must be. ((hugs))

Tara, I have some sense of what you are facing, and I do not envy you. I send many hugs and strength for coping with what is so hard.

Oh my heart goes out to you. And I mean that. I am partial to ANYTHING with fur and your pup is adorable.

We recently had to put our cat of 14 years down and I swear it still brings tears to my eyes. Just know you're in my heart and I'm sending best wishes to you and that beautiful, sweet dog.

Oh, I feel for you! My little doggie, my best friend for the last 14 years, is suffering from the same. Back legs failing, steroids not helping as much as they did in January; it's so hard.

I do wish you and your sweet doggie the best.

I'm bloghopping but chose to comment on this post instead of the top one. I'm sorry about your doggy; I've been there and know it's hard. (((hugs)))

I hope things are improving! It's so hard when the constant of a furry friend is hurting or failing. I'm sorry.
